Alternative to Populism from a Human Rights Perspective

The Conference of European Churches and the Spanish Evangelical Church will hold a conference on “Alternative to Populism from a Human Rights Perspective” from 17 to 19 October 2019 at the Ecumenical Center Los Rubios in Malaga, Spain.

The conference will bring into focus Article 20 (2) of the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, stressing that “any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law.”

European churches are deeply concerned especially about the dehumanisation and stigmatization of minorities: religious, ethnics, migrants, refugees and other vulnerable groups. During the 2019 CEC Summer School on Human Rights, the question how populism affects churches from the parish level, and what clergy could and should do about it, emerged as crucial issues in discussions.

Therefore, the conference aims to provide guidance on this matter for the Conference of European Churches, with particular focus on democracy and rule of law.
