CEC President Rev. Christian Krieger with Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, president of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE) recently participated at the first Ecumenical Prayer for Creation in Assisi.

The Ecumenical Prayer meant to celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Creation and the opening of the Season of Creation was held from 31 August and 1 September 2018.

A series of prayers and meditations were held in various locations in Assisi and culminated in front of the basilica of St. Francis.

Rev. Christian Krieger in his contribution underlined that “Care for Creation is an undisputable part of Christian theology, of our relation between people with God and with this world.”

Rev. Krieger added, “Care for Creation is an unequivocal task for all Christians and for all churches. It is the task which goes hand in hand with another principal task of churches – efforts for unity. There is no difference in efforts for Care for Creation among the churches from all variety of different traditions. Care for Creation is the task for which all churches can work together without raising any other issues needed to be resolved before.”

“Care for Creation is the task for all of us. It is not only urgent, but pertinent for churches. We need to step up our efforts and be responsible for the beautiful gift of God’s creation. We can and we need to do it! Working and praying for creation together,” Rev. Krieger emphasised.

At the event, churches from Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox and Protestant traditions participated. Among representatives of ecumenical organisations were the World Council of Churches, the Lutheran World Federation, ACT Alliance, European Christian Environmental Network and the Global Catholic Climate Movement, among others.

To observe the Season of Creation, presidents of CEC and CCEE recently released a joint video calling to pray and care for creation.
