8th Assembly of the European Christian Environmental Network
“Our daily bread – living in a time of climate change.”

The 8th Assembly of the European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN) will meet from 9 – 13 June 2010 in Prague. The Assembly will gather delegates, activists and guests from the churches in Europe to discuss and work together on joint activities regarding the challenges facing the environment. The meeting will take up the recommendations of the 13th Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) for further work on caring for creation.

The theme of the Assembly is “Our daily bread – living in a time of climate change”. The outcomes of the UN Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009 raised a number of challenges for tackling continuing climate change. The Assembly will provide an opportunity for strengthening the coordinated action of churches in Europe in responding to this challenge.

The discussions of the Assembly will focus on the theme of availability and quality of food in the perspective of climate change. This is deeply linked with the question of the production of waste, with the question of lifestyle and with the question of sufficiency. The Assembly will concentrate on the European aspects of the link between climate change and food and the role that Christian communities in Europe can play in responding to the need for lifestyle changes.

The Assembly will provide a space for sharing and exchange of the experiences of the variety of activities that churches in Europe are involved in. A particular importance will be given to strengthening the networking in churches from Central and Eastern Europe.

In the thematic discussions, the emphasis in the work will be put on theological aspects of the theme. The meeting will also strengthen the ECEN commitment to continuing support for Creation Time, celebrated in European churches from 1 September to 4th October, and providing the liturgical elements for these celebrations.

The Assembly will be held in the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague following the invitation of the churches in the Czech Republic.
