EU Policy and Legislation
In cooperation with the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) Brussel’s office, the Conference of European Churches carries out monitoring and action on EU policy and legislation. The Thematic Reference Group for this area provides a forum for discussion and exchange of information on current legal and political matters emerging from the European Institutions. It deliberates on a range of topics including church-state law, fundamental rights, dialogue between the EU and churches, employment law, and other relevant matters.

Refugee and Migrant Crisis: Ecumenical organisations appeal to ministers of EU Justice and Home Affairs Council
Five of Europe’s ecumenical organisations have called on the ministers of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council for a unified, ambitious and rights-based refugee and migration policy. The Conference of European Churches joins with the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe (CCME), Eurodiaconia, ACT Alliance EU, and EU-CORD in this appeal.

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) expresses its deep concern about the repeated loss of life in the Mediterranean. CEC deplores that for over two decades tens of thousands of migrants have drowned in their attempts to reach safety or find a more dignified life in Europe.

An estimated 800,000 women, men, and children are victims of human trafficking within the EU today. The EU and its member states urgently need to implement the legal framework already in place and to intensify cooperation with civil society and church organisations that work with victims at the grassroots level. This was one of the main messages of the Dialogue Seminar organised by COMECE and the Church and Society Commission of CEC in cooperation with CCME in dialogue with the EU Commission on 27 November.
