8th Summer School on Human RightsJuly 20, 2021 15:30 July 23, 2021 12:00 From 1:30 pm to 10:00 am
In a series of webinars, the Conference of European Churches (CEC) will hold its 8th Summer School on Human Rights focusing on the theme “Ensuring Security of Worship Places and Religious Communities” from 20 to 23 July 2021.
This year’s Summer School is held in cooperation with the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), with its programme being prepared by CEC Thematic Group on Human Rights, in line with the Safer and Stronger Communities in Europe (SASCE), a CEC project funded by the European Commission.
The event is held online due to COVID-19 pandemic, instead of Berlin, its initial venue.
The topic of Freedom of Religion or Belief and Security will be explored in 6 webinars.
The Summer School will examine the theological concept of worship places, as well as their legal status and security protection.
As part of the SASCE project, CEC is preparing a series of security trainings for leaders of worship places, which will take place by the end of December 2021. The Summer School will also discuss the security challenges for the churches in order that the soon-to-be developed training material can meet the needs of CEC Member Churches. The Summer School will also include a training on the reporting of hate crime, similar to previous years.
Participants from churches and other religious communities, as well as lay and ordained persons are invited to register, with a special invitation extended to young people and students.
The Summer School aims to raise awareness on the fundamental right to Freedom of Religion or Belief and its challenges related to security. It will explore how to enhance skills and expertise when reporting hate crime within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and SASCE mechanisms.
The Summer School will also discuss the international legal framework on religious freedom and security linked to the EU, UN and OSCE instruments and mechanisms, looking at case studies from various European countries.
