Report from CEC highlights European Church contribution toward reconciliation and unity ahead of the WCC Assembly. The report is an outcome of CEC’s European Regional Pre-Assembly, which focused on the WCC Assembly theme “Christ’s love moves the world to reconciliation and unity” earlier this year.

Video presentations from CEC seminar on the “role of religion in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine” are now available. The speakers representing Ukrainian churches have addressed pertinent topics related to global church response, religious diplomacy and the responsibility of European churches in promoting ecumenical dialogue, while safeguarding justice and truth.

Humanitarian response from the European churches was highlighted by Slovakian Bishop Peter Mihoč at the Article 17 Dialogue Seminar held on 12 July at the European Parliament in Brussels. He shared striking insights about challenges faced by local churches in providing support to those fleeing the war in Ukraine, as well as strengthening efforts aimed at realising peace in the region.

H. Em. Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ and Rev. Christian Krieger, presidents of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) and of the Conference of European Church (CEC) met with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Wednesday 29 June 2022 to discuss the final report of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), as well the ongoing war in Ukraine and the implementation of the Article 17 Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU).

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) organised a training for its Member Churches in Italy, addressing security and safety risks, threats, and challenges in the country. The training was held on 24 June in Rome, as part of the Safer and Stronger Communities in Europe (SASCE) project, carried out by CEC, and funded by the Internal Police Fund of the European Commission.

The CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen commended the EU-initiated Conference on the Future of Europe. However, he stressed that European churches and faith-based communities would have liked to see their concerns, especially related to freedom of religion and belief, featured in the final report that articulates results from the CoFoE.
