“It is with great joy that we receive the news of His Beatitude Anastasios Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania to be honoured with the Klaus Hemmerle 2020 Prize,” said CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen. “Together with our Member Church, the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania, we celebrate this well-deserved recognition of Archbishop Anastasios’ worthy contribution and long-time commitment to interreligious dialogue and the promotion of peaceful co-existence in a pluralistic society.”

Archbishop Anastasios was honoured with the Klaus Hemmerle 2020 Prize in a ceremony held on 14 February at the Aachen Cathedral in Germany. This honour is awarded every two years by the Focolare Movement to international personalities, who have helped to reach and understand communities with different cultural and religious traditions.

The jury praised Archbishop Anastasios for being a peacemaker and a bridge-builder between Muslims and Christians, as well as Christian churches. His tireless commitment to ecumenical dialogue, education, health and development, especially for youth in Albania have known to make a strong impact on the integration of Albania and a united Europe.
