To connect with CEC Member Churches [1] across Europe, CEC general secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen brings highlights from the significant CEC activities in a video update each month. Dr Sørensen comes from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark (ELCD) with background in theology, mission, ecumenism, leadership and communication.


Prayers for peace in Ukraine

“The role of churches is to offer hope. Prayer offers hope. Therefore, we pray for peace in Ukraine. Thinking of all people, who are directly affected by the armed conflict,” says CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen in his monthly video message, emphasising that it is time for churches in Europe and globally to form a strong alliance of solidarity with people impacted by the war.


CEC’s role in European political discourse

“Europe is characterised by increasingly secular and plural societies. Our Member Churches encounter religious illiteracy and ignorance among decision makers and politicians. What can we do to mitigate this development?” In his video message, CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen affirms the role of churches and faith communities in society, stressing that CEC must claim and safeguard faith as a legitimate element in a European political discourse.

As the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins this year, churches across Europe celebrate the gift of unity through prayer – inspired by the theme “We saw the star in the East, and we came to worship him” presented by the Middle East Council of Churches. “The theme inspires European churches to share the koinonia in word, prayer and action,” says CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen.

European Regional Pre-Assembly

CEC general secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen introduces CEC’s upcoming European Regional Pre-Assembly [2] that will explore the theme “Christ’s love moves the world to reconciliation and unity” in Warsaw. The event from 25 to 27 February 2022 will prepare its participants to bring European voices to the upcoming WCC Assembly [3] in Karlsruhe.

“In CEC, we have always been bridge builders. From the very beginning in 1959 between Eastern and Western Europe. After 1989, CEC was strong in building bridges between opponents in European conflicts.
