    Advancing Freedom of Religion or Belief for All: Experts gather at Halki

    From September 7 to 9 more than 40 human rights experts from across Europe journeyed to the hilltop theological school of Halki on the Turkish island of Heybeliada. Once the heart of theological education for the Orthodox world, the school closed in 1971 as a result of a ban on private higher education in Turkey. Arriving by plane, train, and even by foot, participants discussed and debated approaches to advancing freedom of religion or belief.

    European contribution to the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace

    The Conference of European Churches is pleased to announce a new website about the European contribution to the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace. CEC Pilgrimage ( features a calendar of European church events leading to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in December 2015. The microsite also hosts links to CEC Member Church contributions to the pilgrimage, background information on the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, and news relating to climate justice and faith. Regular updates on the site will raise awareness of climate justice issues of special importance leading to Paris.

    Advancing Freedom of Religion or Belief for All

    From 6 to 9 September, senior religious leaders, representatives from the European Commission, and scholars will gather in Halki and Istanbul for a conference on freedom of religion or belief. More than 40 human rights experts from CEC Member Churches are expected to attend.

    Christians unite in prayers for the healing of creation

    The Conference of European Churches encourages all to join in a day of prayer for creation and its healing. On 1 September, Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican, Roman Catholic, and other Christians around the world will offer thanksgiving for the gifts of creation and pray for its protection and renewal.

    Porajmos: Remembering the Roma genocide of World War II

    Sunday 2 August is Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorating the genocide of Roma people during World War II. Declared by the European Parliament in 2015, the day marks the anniversary of the extermination of more than 3,000 Roma at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944.

    In two days of performances, public speeches, and ecumenical prayer, CEC joined in commemorating the 600th anniversary of the death of Jan Hus. Events took place in Prague, the city where Hus lived and preached, on 5 and 6 July 2015.

    On 16 June senior Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and Mormon leaders gathered for the 11th annual high-level meeting at the European Commission.
