5 December, 2022

Members of the Joint Committee of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) reflected on significant themes concerning churches in Europe. The committee met from 28 to 30 November in Brussels.

The committee discussed developments concerning the synodal process within the Catholic Church inspired by the theme of the Synod 2021-2023: Communion, Participation, Mission.

They also reflected on the current situation in Europe concerning questions of peace and security and the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the ecclesiological challenges for the Orthodox Church.

Lastly, the Joint Committee discussed the revision of the ecumenical guidelines for increasing cooperation among churches in Europe that are included in Charta Oecumenica, a document produced by the two organisations and published in 2001. The revision process will take into consideration current challenges and opportunities for churches in Europe.
