The Thematic Reference Group on Education for Democratic Citizenship met in Strasbourg on 5 and 6 July. The members discussed the findings of the workshop, entitled “Democracy and Populism: the Role of Education and CEC” organised during the
2018 Novi Sad General Assembly of the Conference of European Churches. A group of some thirty-five Assembly delegates and observers looked at five questions on the challenges for CEC in dealing with the contemporary educational issues related to democracy at a times when populism is on the rise. The thematic group then discussed and produced an outline of possible future projects, related to the new areas which its work must now embrace, and discussed a framework for a presentation on “Freedom of Religion and Populism,” to be given by CEC Executive Secretary Sören Lenz at the
Summer School on Human Rights in Malaga (Spain) in July.
