Video: Season of Creation - CEC and CCEE join in call to prayer

30 August, 2018

To observe the Season of Creation the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE) are calling Christians and their communities to pray and care for creation. The two organisations have released a joint video featuring message from CEC President Rev. Christian Krieger and CCEE President Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco focusing on this year’s theme “Walking Together”.

In joining this call the European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN) of works for environmental concerns, supporting initiatives of churches across the continent and encouraging a common Christian witness in caring for God's creation.

CCEE, CEC and ECEN will join the first Ecumenical Prayer for Creation in Assisi to celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Creation and the opening of the Season of Creation. The ecumenical prayer service will be held from 31 August – 1 September 2018.

The Season of Creation is observed from 1 September to 4 October around the world and is linked to the Eastern and the Western traditions of Christianity. 1 September was proclaimed as a day of prayer for the environment by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I in 1989.

The 3rd European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu in 2007 recommended that the period from the 1 September to 4 October be dedicated to prayer for the protection of creation and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles that reverse our contribution to climate change.
