CCME European Gathering in Frankfurt am Main, 27-28 March 2014: “Recalling the past, meeting the challenges of the future”
In 1964, the World Council of Churches created the then Churches’ Committee on Migrant Workers in Europe, to find churches’ responses to the guest worker programmes in Western Europe at the time. Migration is internationally defined as crossing the borders and living in another country than one’s own for a year, therefore, Beyond Borders seems to be the appropriate title to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CCME.

Condolences on the death of Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas I
The Conference of European Churches extends its condolences to the Syrian Orthodox Church on the passing away of its Supreme Spiritual Head, Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas I, on 21st March 2014. He was 81 years old.

“Anti-Semitism is still a formidable challenge facing Europe, while this continent’s cultural heritage is in no small part a Jewish heritage” CEC’s General Secretary Guy Liagre told a conference on Jewish-Christian coexistence in Hungary organised by the UNESCO Hungarian National Committee.

In a letter addressed to the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organisations, the Conference of European Churches expressed their “profound concern for the well-being of the churches and people” in Ukraine following the recent “worrying developments” in the country.

On the occasion of the event Europe of values organized by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland on 3-4 March in Brussels, the delegation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, led by Archbishop Kari Mäkinen, visited the office of the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches.

Deaths at European Borders: Churches advocate for “Safe Passage”
Deaths at European external borders can and must be ended, alternatives are available and need to be implemented. This message was highlighted by speakers and participants throughout the conference “Deaths at European Borders – there are alternatives” held in Rome 23-24 February 2015. Politicians and representatives of churches and non-governmental organisations talked about the need for a “toolbox”, because – as Stefan Keßler of the Jesuit Refugee Service Europe highlighted – “not one instrument fits all situations.”

CEC urges member churches to encourage leaders on Syria
The Conference of European Churches is urging its church leaders to pray, and to encourage their political representatives to do all they can to try to secure peace in Syria at the upcoming United Nations-lead Geneva 2 talks.
